Everyone in Albuquerque expects the best from their doctor. No matter what you go in for, you rightfully assume that your doctor knows what he or she is doing. Unfortunately, we continue to hear about cases of medical malpractice frequently in the news, and sadly, this week is no exception.
On Monday, a cosmetic surgeon was sentenced to three years of probation and community service for performing an operation on a co-worker that led to her death. During the 2010 after-hours surgery, the patient -- a woman who worked for the doctor -- lost consciousness. Although the doctor attempted to revive her, the patient died. While this may have been an accident, the doctor apparently gave incorrect information to medical responders that night, which hindered their ability to provide care to the victim.
While the Oregon doctor has been stripped of her license forever, the family of the victim was not satisfied with her sentence. While nothing can ever make up for the loss of a loved one in a situation like this, it is important to know that a negligent doctor can be held further accountable through a medical malpractice lawsuit.
Through a medical malpractice lawsuit, a family can seek compensation for their loss, including compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, and emotional pain and suffering caused by the wrongful death of a loved one. While money will not make things right, some families find that making every effort to hold a negligent doctor accountable leaves them with a sense of closure.
