Commonly misdiagnosed illnesses

Some of the most debilitating illnesses that affect New Mexico patients are also some of the most frequently misdiagnosed. Lyme disease, Celiac disease, and endometriosis all present with symptoms that are shared by other common illnesses. Patients who are not diagnosed may not be able to receive the timely treatment they require for optimal health. For example, Celiac sufferers are intolerant to gluten and experience a range of gastrointestinal side effects that are commonly associated with other illnesses.

Lyme disease is a debilitating disease that mimics other illnesses, such as ALS, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s. If left untreated, Lyme can result in permanent cognitive impairment and chronic pain, among other serious symptoms. Lyme is associated with a bullseye rash, but only 42 percent of patients actually present with this symptom. People with Lyme experience three severe symptoms of the disease on average.

Endometriosis is a disease that causes the uterine lining to accumulate outside of the uterus and in the abdominal cavity, often wrapping around the fallopian tubes. This disease can result in infertility, severe pain during menstruation and intercourse, and excessive bleeding between menstrual cycles. The most common cure for endometriosis is a hysterectomy, and the Fallopian tubes are often removed as well. A late diagnosis may increase the risk of infertility and other complications.

Severe illnesses that share symptoms with other diseases are a common cause of a misdiagnosis. A late or failed diagnosis can rob patients of the time they need to pursue early treatment, which is typically the most effective. A medical malpractice lawyer may be able to provide representation for patients who are not diagnosed in a timely manner.
